ABADES
Abades is a small holiday resort located on the south-east coast from Tenerife on the municipality of Arico, between Poris de Abona and La Jaca, GPS position 28 ° 08 '35,37 "N - 16 ° 26' 23,50" O.
A big majority of the 760 + small white bungalows are owned from Canarian people who live in the much wetter northern part of the island, some others are properties of senior German citizens who use them to spend the winter months on the island. Many of these bungalows are available to rent for long-term contracts as well as for short holidays.
Abades is a very quiet place to stay during the winter, but warm weekends and school holidays bring a sudden rush of activity.

ACCOMMODATION - HOLIDAYS - BUNGALOWS
Most bungalows are built in a similar way, comprising of a living room, bathroom, kitchen, two bedrooms and a small terrace/garden, most of the bungalows have a basement which can make a very nice place to stay as well, and some of the last buildings have a second floor that includes another bathroom and extra bedrooms.
Broadband connection is available in the village and you can get a wireless connection free of charge at the diving centre.
You should drink bottled water instead of tap water, due to a strong imbalance in minerals.
We are at your disposal to help on that point as well; a free service to make sure that our guests get the best quality for the price.

SPORT - DIVING - TENNIS - ANGLING
Many activities are available in Abades free of charges; from the usual beach activities, swimming – very safe access to the sea – snorkelling, beach volley, sailing – a separate entry for a small harbour, angling and fishing, to the use of the tennis/basketball place in the middle of the village.
Please note that spear-gunning is not allowed in the portion of the coast between Poris de Abona and Tajao and that angling or fishing activities require the proper license and respect of legal rules. The non-compliance of these rules would be reported to the Guardia Civil, as a part of our commitment to the environmental cause. Other activities include scuba diving and there is a fitness centre in the new buildings.

BEACH - SUN BATHING - BARBECUE
Access to the beach is disabled-people friendly and a shower has been installed end of 2007. The beach is clean as the Easy Blue World diving centre makes a daily cleaning action, on the beach and in the water.
Sea urchins “Diadema Antillarum” are removed from the coastal area, in accordance to the Canarian law. Smokers should know that cigarette ends are extremely polluting and should not be left in the sand.

NATURISM - SWIMMING
Tenerife South-East coast is very well protected against waves and surge. A naturist beach is available in the next small bay. The water is cristal clear, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving activities, no fishfarm polluting this area unlike the South and West coasts. With only 3 to 5 days of waves per year, Abades is not a paradise for surfers. A natural reservation project with a protected area for swimmers, snorkellers and divers should be concluded before the end of the year 2009.

RESTAURANTS - PUBS
Abades has nine restaurants/pubs available around the square and in the new buildings close to the sea; two small supermarkets which are open every day.
A project in the old leprosy station should involve four small 5 Stars hotels with their own golf complex, and the completion of the church however, it seems that the economic crisis has stopped this project as well. A large marina project between Abades and the red mountain is planned, as well as a swimming pool, but no-one knows if or when these projects will be completed.

REAL ESTATE
There are plans for a new bigger supermarket, a bank and a chemist in the new buildings but these have been postponed a few times. A british-owned fitness studio and pub are already located there. Two real estate offices are available on the square, where you can purchase or rent a bungalow. An ambitious project to double the surface of the village was stopped after the summer 2008, victim of the economic crisis, and the empty roads can be spotted at the village’s entrance.

On the other side of the motorway, the road winds between the wind farms and solar panels, an alternative way to produce energy in a windy and very sunny area. HISTORY
Abades is the result of a relatively recent development. The former villages were higher in the mountain at the edge of the natural forest usually where water could be obtained by digging gullies deep into the mountains to catch the water.
Behind Abades “red mountain”, a small harbour, the “enseñada de Abades” which was primarily used to ship the red stones from the local quarry to other islands as far as Cuba as wells as for local fishermen.
Goat keepers used to live in natural caves after the few winter rainfalls, then headed back to Arico during the long dry season.
The lighthouse, half way between Abades and Poris de Abona, was built in 1902 and replaced with a new tower in 1978.
Leprosy once was considered a major disease on the island. A leprosy station was first built in the north of the island, where most of the local population lived. The bodies were thrown in the sea outside Santa Cruz until a crematorium was built. In 1943 a whole leprosy village was built on the hill above Abades, including an hospital, a crematorium, many bungalows, an administration’s building facing the sea, and the big concrete church, in typical Franco’s style with a huge cross on the top, that everyone can spot from the motorway. The project was never finished as leprosy was almost eradicated from the Canary Islands as advancements in medical treatments became available at the same time. The leprosy station became a military training facility but the whole place was sold to an Italian in 2002. The church is still in an excellent state.
1978 was a key-year for the development of this area with the opening of the southern airport TFS Reina Sofia and the connection through the Autopista Sur TF-1. Between 1978 and 1986, this place was named “Los Abriguitos” and many wooden hutments were built to host the new tourists. In 1986, all wooden hutments were burnt and the Abades project started with a wall facing the sea. In 1987 the square and the small church were built, in 1988 the exit 18 on the motorway took its present shape, in 1993 the roads were covered with asphalt, and the tennis court and small park were finished.
Easy Blue World dive centre was opened in January 2000 and the extension and the PADI School were finished before the summer 2002.
